Chapter 32

Close to Aravalli Range, out of the city line

Payal cleans up their supply and then Aakash pats his side where he was sitting beside the fire.
Payal walks to him and sits down by his side. Aakash looks at Payal and says, “I had a wonderful time today. Thanks to you.”
Payal smiles, “Thanks to you too. It was a special day.”
Aakash gathers courage and asks: Payal, do you have someone special in your life?
Payal looks at him in surprise but answers shyly: Not yet. And you?
Aakash smiles sheepishly: I had girlfriends before and few of them were even serious. But I never had someone with whom I could see my life ahead. Tell me about you. What kind of man would you like to have in your life?
Payal replies with a soft smile: I don’t have a lot of demand from a man. I’m a pretty content person. Just someone kind, sweet, loving, caring, a good family man. But if I can really have more, I’d like to have someone who loves nature as much as I do. (Payal blushes)
Aakash (thinks): Wow… Is she talking about me? Should I ask?
As he opens his mouth to ask, Payal asks: And what about you? What kind of person do you see as your future partner?
Aakash (thinks): Now is my chance. (Says aloud) Well, I’m also sorta content person. I would like to be with someone who makes me happy, who doesn’t mind having fun but at the same time responsible, patient and caring. Family is important to me, so she should be able to like my family if not love them. She also should be a today’s woman but someone who hasn’t lost touch with tradition and values. And if I get a nature lover like me, it would be the icing on the cake. (Looks at Payal to guage her reaction).
Payal’s eyes sparkle thinking that the description fits her perfectly and she was about to open her mouth to say what’s in her heart. But then she remembers that the description fits Khushi as well, except the nature loving part. But then, Aakash didn’t say that the woman he marries must be a nature lover. It would be nice if she is, but if she isn’t, then it’s fine too. She decides that she won’t say anything until she has a chance to talk to Khushi.
Aakash notices Payal’s expression and worries in thoughts: Did she get the hint? Or did she get it but doesn’t like me.
Both sit in the peaceful night under the blanket of stars by the fire pondering about each other’s thoughts.

Nandi (clutching his horns, extremely frustrated): *His mouth moving minus sound*
Devi Maiyya (Raises her brow): Why are you not talking?
Nandi furiously points at his mouth indicating her trick to leave him without sound.
Devi Maiyya remembers: Ah… Here you go.
Nandi (furious): Urrrrrggghhhh… What is wrong with the humans? Why do you make everything so complicated? Why do you have to look for hidden meanings when one simple question solves the issue?
Devi Maiyaa (nods wisely): Well, that’s exactly how I used to be in my initial days when all the Gods created me to kick tush of that demon. I had the same question and same level of frustration. But you see, being a smart, wise and extremely efficient woman, I have learned to channel my frustration and not throw tantrums and diva attitude anymore.
Nandi’s eyes widen: What? You don’t throw tantrums? Then who the heaven destroyed an entire city of demons because she was in a snit?  These days around here, DIVA spells DEVI…
Devi Maiyya (grits her teeth): No I do not. How dare you? And that thing about the demons was just a misunderstanding. But when my husband stopped me, I stopped, didn’t I?
Nandi (snickers, rolls his eyes): Yeah, he stopped you alright. He had to lie down so you could stop realizing who you have stomped on in your temper.
Devi Maiyya (Turning blue in anger): I said sorry for that. If someone say sorry, you forgive and forget. That’s the rule. Everybody knows I’m the Goddess of good temper.
Nandi (realizing potential trouble at that blue colour, hurriedly replies): Yes, ma’m.
Devi Maiyya throws him a suspicious glance and sucks on her pepsi furiously.

Bukhara, Chanakyapuri

The platters arrive.
Khushi grabs the knife and fork and starts eating.
NK whispers: I don’t think I can eat with Nannav looking at me like a hungry wolf about to pounce on his prey.
Khushi (busy stuffing her mouth mumbles): I eat more when I’m nervous. Besides the faster you eat, the faster we leave. So start chewing.
NK starts gulping down the kababs following Khushi’s example.
ASR looks at them and smirks: Wow, I always wanted to see a pair of chipmunks eat. I never thought I’d have that view in New Delhi.
Khushi’s cheeks were poofed up with food. But her eyes narrow and flash dangerously promising future retribution.
NK looks at Khushi attacking food like she is on a mission and continues his part in it.
Khushi was just attacking a particularly tasty kabab and a moan comes out of her mouth at the succulent taste. Her eyes close in divine pleasure and a blissful expression come in her face.
ASR looks at her expression intently and thinks to himself: Is she doing it purposely or she is that oblivious?
He looks at NK to see he has also stopped eating and gawking Khushi like a adolescent boy with his first crush. He grits his teeth at NK, but he is busy watching Khushi…
Khushi licks her lips of the kabab juice, leaving it glistening with moisture and two pairs of throats go dry at the view.
ASR chokes at his sip of Lassi and NK swallows hard his unchewed bite.
Something gets stuck on NK’s thoat and he starts choking.
Khushi drops the fork and turns to NK. She starts thumping his back and gives him a glass of water: Are you okay?
NK looks at her with tear-filled eyes due to choking and says: Khushiji, you are like an angel. You saved my life.
Khushi smiles and continues to rub his back.
ASR grits his teeth in irritation and barks: Oh for heaven’s sake, she didn’t save you. She just got you a glass of water.
(Turns to Khushi) And you, get your hand off him.
Khushi withdraws her hand and scowls at him.
NK looks at ASR miserably to indicate he didn’t mind her hands on him but ASR’s glare stops him at his track.
They finish their food and before NK or Khushi can take their money out, ASR takes out his credit card to pay the bill. The waiter gives him his card and slip back.
Khushi asks for her own bill.
ASR scowls at her: I paid it.
Khushi furiously whispers: You pay your bill. But I pay my own way.
Khushi asks the waiter to refund her portion of the bill and to get her own bill.
The waiter tells her that he can’t do it as the transaction has gone through.
Khushi frowns: Fine. (Turns to ASR) Then take the money out of my salary.
ASR raises his brow but keeps his mouth shut.
NK asks brightly: So Nannav, you are now going back to office right? I will be home later.
Khushi brightens up as well.
ASR smirks: Actually, I thought about what you said this morning and I realized, since you are here, I should spend time with my family. So let’s go home and spend family time.
NK stammers: What? I mean, we can spend time tomorrow too, right? Besides, I have to drop Khushiji home.
ASR smirks his evil smile: Don’t worry about that. You go home and wait for me. I will drop Khushi home and meet you there. She won’t care whether I drop her or not because I don’t exist for her.
Khushi opens her mouth in a “O”: What? No. I will go with NKji.
ASR raises his brow: Why? Does it mean my presence makes you uncomfortable?
Khushi indignant: Of course not.
ASR smirks: Great. So it’s decided. NK, you go home and I will join you after I drop Khushi.
ASR grabs Khushi’s hand and pulls her out of the restaurant leaving a splattering NK behind.

Nandi (indignant): What a ham-handed approach. Couldn’t he ask her nicely?
Devi Maiyya still irritated munching on her popcorn.
Nandi (continues): And look how he dragged her out of the restaurant as if she is his own property.
Devi Maiyya’s scowl gets deeper.
Nandi (digs a deeper hole): I think NK suits her better than ASR anyway. In fact… Moo moo…
Nandi’s eyes widen at the weird sound coming off his mouth and looks at Devi Maiyya…
Devi Maiyya (innocent cherubic face): I think Mooing suits you better anyway… Everyone should stick to the things that suit them.
Nandi scowls and moos in his mind: Why the heaven do I open my mouth around her anyway?

Chapter 31

Bukhara, ITC Maurya

Khushi stammers: Aaa Aap? (Yooouuu You?)
ASR bends his head on the side and asks: Haan main. Kyun? Tum kisi aur ko expect kar rahee thi? (Yes, me. Why? Were you expecting someone else?)
Khushi grits her teeth: No. We were not expecting ANYONE else.
ASR flashes his evil smile: How nice. It’s always lovely to see people you are not expecting… Isn’t it?
NK clears his throat and says: Nannav, what are you doing here?
ASR (innocent face): Having lunch. What else?
NK tries again: Umm… Are you having lunch all by yourself?
ASR smirks: Why no. I’m having lunch with you…
Khushi screams: WHAT?
ASR bends so his face is close to Khushi’s: Why Ms. Gupta… Do I make you uncomfortable?
Khushi stammers: No. Absolutely not. (Bolder stance) In fact, you don’t even exist for me. (Mentally gives a proud pat on her back for standing up against the Laad Governor)…
ASR’s sharklike smile widens: How wonderful. Then you won’t mind if I join both of you for lunch, will you? (sits down right across from Khushi and NK)
Khushi and NK gulp together while lamenting on their luck which is looking worse and worse with every passing minute.

Nandi (shakes his head): I personally think it’s rude to barge into someone’s lunch.
Devi Maiyya (sarcastic): I personally think it’s rude to give unwanted advice. But you do it all the time too…

Close to Aravalli Range, out of the city line

Aakash and Payal comes down from their hiking trail, pleasantly tired but refreshed.
Aakash looks at Payal: Payal, coffee?
Payal smiles at him: Sounds good.
Aakash digs through his camping supplies and takes out a tin pan and a instant coffee mix, a packet of sugar cube and some sachet of powdered milk.
Payal walks around looking for twigs and branches they can use to light a fire.
They work together like a well-oiled machine as if they have been doing it for years.
Payal gathers the branches together to form a pile where Aakash lights a fire from his lighter.
Then he places the tin mug on the small fire and Payal pours the water from her water bottle to boil and soon they have water boiling for coffee.
Then Aakash takes out his mug from his pack and Payal takes out hers and they look at each other and laugh out in surprise.

Their Coffee Mugs:

Aakash (still laughing): Oh my God… That’s so freaking unbelievable…
Payal (also laughing): I know, right…
Aakash (stops laughing and thinks): I don’t believe in this kind of things, but is something is giving me signals to take the step towards Payal?
Payal (also stops laughing and thinks): I don’t know why I suddenly feel as if someone up there is trying to tell me something. Should I tell Aakash how I feel?
Both open their mouth to speak together and stop embarrassedly.
Payal (shyly): You go ahead.
Aakash opens his mouth to tell her about his feelings but he looks into Payal’s eyes shining in the camp fire bathed by moonlight and his words get caught in his throat. He clears it awkwardly: Ummm… The water is ready… Shall we make the coffee?
Payal was disappointed but smiles: Right. I’ll make it.
While Payal walks to the fire to add coffee, sugar and powdered milk, Aakash mentally smacks his head calling him all kinds of names.
Payal comes back with the both their mugs and Aakash asks: Ummmm… Payal, what were you going to say?
Payal looks at Aakash, fire light highlighting every one of his gorgeous chiselled feature making him look otherworldly handsome and her breath gets caught in her throat too. She swallows to wet her dry throat and was about to speak when she remembers that she still hasn’t talked to Khushi about him.
So she says instead: I was just going to say thank you for a wonderful day.
Aakash was disappointed but smiles: You are welcome. In fact I should thank you. I never had this much fun in years.
Payal smiles back: You are welcome as well.
They sip their coffee in comfortable silence under a blanket of stars enjoying each other’s company and sneaking glances occasionally at each other.

Nandi: No no no… Why why why did you stop Aakash? Why couldn’t you say those words? And Payal? Why are you waiting to talk to Khushi? Why can’t you see what is clearly visible in Aakash’s eyes?
Devi Maiyya sighs: Nandi, you know you are starting to resemble those melodramatic female leads in daily soup. Just tone it down a bit, will you?
Nandi (crazy eyes, desperate): Devi Maiyya, please do something. You can, I know you can. Just zap them or something and make them fall in each other’s laps or whatever, the nature will take its course.
Devi Maiyya smirks at Nandi: The nature will take its course in its own sweet time. Stop watching late night movies. They are corrupting your mind.
Nandi (sulking): Well, will a petition help? If I get my blog readers sign up for it?
Devi Maiyya (sarcastic): Noooo. What do you think this is? Democracy? This is heaven and I rule here. So you have two options, shut up and watch or shut up and don’t watch. Capische?
Nandi pouts…

Bukhara, ITC Maurya:

ASR signals a waiter and he comes running with the menu.
ASR signals to Khushi & NK: What did they order?
The waiter replies: Sir, ma’m ordered Hillary Clinton kabab platter and sir ordered Chelsea Clinton kabab platter.
ASR smirks: Hillary eh? Well, then get me the Bill Clinton platter I guess.
Khushi fumes and NK looks at Khushi miserably.
The waiter bobs his head: Very well sir. And something for drink?
ASR smirks at Khushi: Mango Lassi no sugar please.
The waiter bobs his head again: Sure sir.
The waiter leaves.
Khushi bends forward and furiously whispers: What do you think you are playing at Raizada.
ASR sighs: Tsk tsk Ms. Gupta. Is that the way you talk to your boss?
Khushi widens her sarcastic smile: You are my boss in the office Monday to Wednesday from morning to afternoon and Thursday to Friday from afternoon to evening. The rest of the time, I’m my own boss and today is Saturday which you are ruining for me. So eat your food and leave us alone. Capische?
ASR’s eyes blaze in response while NK looks at Khushi in awestruck eyes.

Devi Maiyya giggles: I love this girl…
Nandi sulks: I know. This is why you are not paying attention to my girl.
Devi Maiyya frowns and zaps Nandi’s voice into silence.
Nandi continues talking but no sound comes out.
Devi Maiyya winks: Learned this trick from Mute button in TV. What a lovely technology.

Chapter 30

ASR’s Office, ASR Designs

ASR barks on the phone: What the? Aman, how many times I told you that I want the file on the fabrics not the accessories? Get me the file right now?
Aman stammers: Yes, sir. I will bring it right away.
ASR slams the phone down.
Aman wipes the sweat from his brow: What happened to ASR today? Seems crazier than usual. Khushiji is right. He is a Laad Governor. (Giggles)
ASR’s voice comes booming: Aman.
Aman scrambles to grab the fabric files and runs to ASR’s office.
Aman stammers: Sir, here’s the fabric file.
ASR snatches the file from his hand and growls: Find out where NK is.
Aman (wide eyed): What?
ASR (sarcastic): Didn’t you hear me, Aman? Find out where my cousin NK is.
Aman confused: Okay. Shall I call a detective agency then? Is he lost?
ASR barks: No. But you’ll be lost from ASR Designs if I don’t get NK’s whereabouts in 30 mins. Get it?
Aman nods furiously and backs out of ASR’s office while pushing his glasses up his nose.

Nandi (confused): What’s it to ASR where NK and Khushi go? He doesn’t like either of them anyway…
Devi Maiyya (smug): There are a lot of things you tell your heart, but will it ever listen?
Nandi (sulks to himself): That’s exactly her problem. She never gives me stuff straight. My followers are complaining that I’m being cryptic, try talking to her for a day and see…

Connought Place, New Delhi:

Khushi takes NK to a shabby looking shop.
NK (confused): Khushiji, why have we come here?
Khushi smiles: NKji, I have designed an outfit for my Jiji and me to wear at the wedding on Saturday when your family meets her. So I have come to pick them up from the tailor.
Masterji beams seeing Khushi: Khushi bitiya, andar aaiye. Aapka design ready hain. Kya aap ek cup chai piyengi jab tak hum aapke kapde andar se leke aate hain?
(Khushi bitiya, come inside. Your design is ready. Would you like to have a cup of tea while I bring them from the back?)
Khushi smiles: Nehin Masterji. Hum thik hain. Aap bas outfits le aaiye. (No Masterji, I’m good. You please just bring the outfits for me.)

Masterji goes in and brings out the first mannequin wearing this lehenga.

Payal’s Lehenga:

NK (wide eyed): Wow…
Khushi beams: Perfect. Now where is mine?
Masterji goes in and brings out the second mannequin wearing another lehenga.

Khushi's Lehenga:

NK (wide eyed): Wow, again.
Khushi beams: Thanks NKji. I’m glad you liked it.
NK smiles: You are very talented Khushiji.
Khushi blushes.
Then she remembers: NKji, now it’s your responsibility to make sure that Aakashji’s Sherwani matches Jiji’s outfit. Make sure that he wears either sky blue or matt gold okay?
NK shows her both thumbs up: Done. (Then thinks for a moment) What should I wear Khushiji?
Khushi smiles: The theme of the wedding is blue. So wear anything with a little blue. Now let’s go and have an authentic Indian lunch.
NK beams: Okay.
Khushi pays Masterji and NK carries the bags to his car.
Khushi sees NK’s car and goes slack jawed: Wow, NKji.
NK beams: Isn’t it a beauty? It’s a Lambhorghini.
Khushi (confused): Lamb curry what? I was going to say what a lovely colour.
NK’s face falls at Khushi’s complete unappreciation to such an amazing piece of machine. But he beams thinking at least she likes the colour. Their choices are so similar.
Khushi climbs into the car with NK.
NK asks: Where to now, Khushiji?
Khushi smiles: We are going to have an authentic Indian Lunch. So we are off to Bukhara.
Then Khushi directs NK to the restaurant for their lunch.

Nandi (scratches his ear): I don’t understand. Are they on a date?
Devi Maiyya (smiles): May be…
Nandi (confused): But isn’t ASR on his way?
Devi Maiyya (smug): Yes, he is…
Nandi (even more confused): Why are you happy then?
Devi Maiyya (giggles and winks): Unlike your bland diet, I like spice in mine.
Nandi shakes his head in confusion…

ASR’s Office, ASR Designs:

Aman knocks on the door of the office and enters after ASR’s permission: Sir, the detective has informed me that your cousin NK was spotted today with Khushiji at the Connought Place. He was wearing a yellow tee shirt with a purple jacket and Khushiji was wearing a blue anarkali. He was driving a red Lamb…
ASR (sarcastically): I didn’t ask their history. Just tell me where they are now. Are they still in Connought Place?
Aman fumbles with the papers and then pulls out one: No sir. They are having lunch at Bukhara in Chanakyapuri.
ASR gets up, packs his laptop and grabs his suit jacket: Okay. I’m leaving now. You can go too.
Aman can’t believe his luck: I can?
ASR (sarcastically): Didn’t you hear me, Aman?
Aman stammers: Right ASR. I mean sir… Right away.
ASR strides out of his office and drives away in his Black BMW.

Devi Maiyya (gleefully slurps her pepsi): Oh me, Oh me, Oh me…
Nandi (whispers to himself): She obviously got serious case of narcissism. Her devotees don’t remember her as often as she does. No wonder she likes ASR so much.

Bukhara, Chanakyapuri

NK and Khushi were sitting in one of the table waiting for their food while having their Mango Lassi.

Bukhara:

NK (slurping his Lassi): Khushiji, what delicious drink… Thanks so much for bringing me here.
Khushi (too busy gulping down her own Lassi): You are welcome NKji. I’m glad you like it. It’s called Lassi.
NK (wide eyed): Oh… What a lovely name…
Khushi beams a big smile: It’s my favourite drink.
NK beams even bigger smile: From now on, it’s my favourite drink too…
A voice booms behind them sarcastically: How sweet. Looks like we all like the same drink…
Khushi and NK turn around and their mouths hang open…
ASR smirks at them seeing their expression which makes Khushi promptly choke in her drink.

Nandi: Oh poor thing… I think something hit the wrong spot.
Devi Maiyya (giggles): Don’t worry, that thing will hit the right spot soon enough…
Nandi scratches his horns: Huh?
Devi Maiyya (serious): Not for below 18 audience.
Nandi (surprised): Since when I am below 18?
Devi Maiyya (deadpan): I meant 18 million years.
Nandi (pouts): Crap…

Chapter 29

Close to Aravalli Range, out of the city line
Aakash parks the bike and takes out his camping equipment from his backpack.
Payal also takes out her camera bag.
They locate a suitable place to pitch the tent and together put it up.

The Tent:

Aakash takes off his leather jacket and asks Payal: Would you like to go for hiking Payal?
Payal smiles: Sure.
She also takes off her leather jacket, takes her camera bag and start hiking on a nearby trail.
As they walk up on the trail, Payal takes out her camera and starts clicking pictures to capture this beautiful day forever in her memory.
They take pictures of each other where Aakash shares his vast knowledge of geographical landscape and Payal shows him the techniques of photography.
While Payal tries to show Aakash how to focus with her camera, Aakash looks at her lovingly and thinks, “I love you Payal. I wonder what you think about me.”
While Aakash tries to focus through the lenses, Payal looks at him with love and thinks, “I love you Aakash. But I wonder what you feel about me.”

Nandi squeals like a fangirl on ecstacy: OMG OMG OMG… Come on come on… Say it out loud… Kaho Naa Pyaar Hain (Translation: Say Naa, You’re in Love; also a title of a Bollywood movie)
Devi Maiyya (irritated): Right now, I’d prefer Khamoshi… (Translation: Silence, again a title of another Bollywood movie)
Nandi (under her breath): Pyaar Ke Dushman (Enemy of love; title of a Bollywood movie)

Connought Place, New Delhi

NK reached CafĂ© Vagabond shortly after 10 o’clock.
He saw Khushi was standing there already waiting for him

Khushi’s Look:

She smiled when she spotted NK: Hi, NKji.
NK beamed: Hi Khushiji. I’m so happy you called. Aakash went somewhere this morning without telling anyone and you know Nannav, he doesn’t wanna do anything with anybody.
Khushi makes face hearing her boss’s name but then twinkles: Actually, NKji. I know where Aakashji went.
NK (wide eyed): You do?
Khushi beams: Yes, Aakashji went on a nature trip with my sister.
NK (confused): That’s good.
Khushi wide eyed and excited grabs NK’s hands: Don’t you know what that means?
NK’s mind fogs up and eyes go wide seeing Khushi holding his hands. He tries to concentrate: Errrmmm… That your sister likes nature trip like Aakash?
Khushi bounces like a ping pong ball with every word in excitement: No no… That means that Aakashji likes my sister and they are out on a date… (Big wide bright eyes) Together…
NK looks at her beaming face glowing with happiness and says dazedly: Wow…
Khushi beams: Hai naa? (Isn’t it?)
NK manages to nod his head.
Khushi beams: So that’s why I called you here.
NK smiles stupidly, still doesn’t get the point.
Khushi leans closer and whispers: I need your help.
NK (wide eyed, whispers back): Ok.
Khushi (wide eyed thinking): Arre wah, maangne se pehle hi haan kar diya? (Oh wow, he agreed even before I asked?)
But continues aloud: Look NKji, my family is going to meet yours on the wedding next Saturday to finalize Aakashji and my Jiji’s marriage. So we have to make sure everything goes according to the plan. (Pleads) You will help me naa?
NK (nods furiously): Yes, of course.
Khushi beams: I knew it. I knew I could trust only you. You are so sweet NKji. You know what? Because you are being so helpful, I am feeling magnanimous. You can ask anything from me. Go ahead and ask.
NK (wide eyed): Anything?
Khushi beams: Ya. What do you want?
NK smiles wide: You.
Khushi (wide eyed): Kya? (What?)
NK stammers: Errrmm… I mean you to take me for an authentic Indian experience in Delhi.
Khushi beams: That’s it? Chalo aaj hi aap ko Indian experience karwa dete hain. (Let’s go. I will take you for an Indian Experience today)
NK beams at the prospect of spending whole day with Khushi: Okay.
Khushi: But first, we need to go somewhere, then we will do our Indian Experience. Okay?
NK smiles: Okay. Whatever you want, Khushiji.
Khushi smiles: How sweet.
NK blushes.

Nandi scratches hi head: Why is NK ringing the doorbell that's never going to open for him?
Devi Maiyya: There is a human saying, “Just because you aren’t playing that game, doesn’t mean you don’t try your shot at an empty goalpost.”
Nandi (still confused): But what happens when the monster goalie stakes his claim on the goalpost?
Devi Maiyya (wise look): Then a smart man grabs his football and sneaks from the backyard.
Nandi wisely nods at the Goddesses pearls of wisdom: Gotcha.
